I came back to make a post because I like this so much:

Michael Stipe and the In The Sun Foundation are releasing a six-song EP featuring collaborations with Chris Martin, Justin Timberlake, Joseph Arthur and others--but every track is a version of Joseph Arthur's heartbreakingly awesome song, "In The Sun." And Michael Stipe takes the spotlight on every track.

You can get the EP from the iTunes Music Store, and one of the tracks (with Chris Martin) will be on Grey's Anatomy next week. It's a Katrina benefit EP, so proceeds will go the Mercy Corps.

I think it's funny that Switchfoot got mad that Sony made their new CD copy-protected and posted on their Sony messageboard detailed instructions of how to get around copy protection and rip a CD.

“It is heartbreaking to see our blood, sweat, and tears over the past two years blurred by the confusion and frustration surrounding this new technology,” posted bass player Tim Foreman.

The Digital Rights Agency just launched Bliptones, "the world's first indie-only ringtone webstore!" For two dollars, you can buy ringtones by bands like Death Cab, The Decemberists, Low, Xiu Xiu and more. Indie music is becoming so not indie.

Paul McCartney's animal activist wife Heather Mills McCartney lost her fake leg after stirring up trouble with security guards at J-Lo's fur-loving NY office! Then, when she asked to go to the bathroom to put the leg back on, the guard said no, and she had to do it in the hallway.

That is so wrong on so many levels.

MUSICIANS MOBILIZE FOR HURRICANE RELIEF

The fabulous TV on the Radio recorded a song in response to the disaster. It's called "Dry Drunk Emperor." Lyrics and free download available at Touch and Go.

The String Cheese Incident is teaming up with Conscious Alliance to bring truckloads of aid to hurricane refugees in Texas.

Dave Matthews Band has added another concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver to benefit hurricane relief. Ticketmaster will donate service charges, and Aramark will donate some food and beverage proceeds.

Gretta's packing up and taking her party to New York City to record a solo album featuring collaborations with some "good friends at Saddle Creek." (Can we say Conor Oberst?)

Cursive regrets to announce the departure of cellist Gretta Cohn. After four years in the band, Gretta has decided to leave Omaha to pursue other interests and projects, including a potential solo album. The split is very amicable: the band wishes her well and she in turn eagerly anticipates the new Cursive material to come. Cursive will not be seeking a replacement.

Don't let it get you down, Cursive is working on an album set for a 2006 release.

Well, Kanye took a turn for the outspoken two-thirds of the way through "A Concert For Hurricane Relief," which aired on NBC Friday night. Mike Myers didn't know how to repond when Kanye said, unscripted, "George Bush doesn't care about black people." The show was live (uncensored) on the East Coast.

Mississippi blues legend R.L. Burnside died last night in Memphis. He was 78.

Burnside was a fisherman for most of his life. He became a professional musician at 65 and joined Fat Possum Records.

Burnside shot a man who was supposedly trying to kick him out of his home. "It was between him and the Lord, him dyin'," he told The New Yorker. "I just shot him in the head."

He recorded over a dozen albums, and was made famous in part by contemporary groups like the Beastie Boys and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

Muddy Waters was his cousin-in-law.
